“SM at 60”
SM greeted their 60th through the ignited lights of the iconic Mall of Asia Globe. The celebration took off with a wave of exciting 60 themed visual attractions, fun experiences, and interactive activities in SM Malls nationwide commencing this May until October 2018.
In conjunction with Manila’s celebration, Mindanao also joined the festivities through the #AweSM Weekend Party at SM Lanang Premier last May 25. The event’s peak was a fashion show lead by Hideo Muraoka and the Perkin Twins together with fashion forward youth of Davao. Kitty, daughter of President Duterte, also graced the stage. It all ended with a big blast of confetti and everyone taking their phones out, capturing the qr code displayed in the stage screen to get a chance to win such #AweSM prizes from a gelato to concert tickets.
Going back to what has been and looking now to what has become. SM has come a long way from just a shoe mart in 1960’s in Makati and Cubao to one of the, if not the most, successful malls in the country up to date. Having almost a thousand retail stores, and 70 malls in the Philippines, and even expanded 7 malls in China. SM Prime Holdings, property arm of SM, has also become a leading developer in residential condominiums in Metro Manila. The company also owns and operates world class hotels, a state of the art arena, convention and exhibition centers and premier beach and mountain resorts. SM doesn’t only focus on profitability but also social responsibility through the SM Foundation and SM Cares. With this programs, they have reached out to communities with deficiencies on education, health and livelihood. Also, they are environmental advocates with schemes such as building green spaces in its malls, sustainability efforts with trash to cash recycling and disaster risk reduction programs. A successful company truly knows how to give back to its community and environment.
“Tourism is a catalyst” as what Mr. Sy believes in and it is evident with built destination malls like SM MOA. SM is a tourist destination because it offers convenience and accessibility with its unlimited facilities and high quality services, truly a one stop shop and haven for travelers. This is not only the case, but also for family and friends as well. Malls became part of the Filipino lifestyle, a place where family could bond and friends could hang out. A place to shop together, dine together and have fun together.
SM may have turned 60 but it didn’t go out of style.
